Jerryd Bayless was visibly disappointed on draft night when he slipped to number 11. At NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, he’s proving why he could have easily gone higher.

For the second straight night, Bayless led all scorers with 26 points. He also had six rebounds and two assists.

The Blazers fell behind to Sacramento early before Bayless took over in the final minutes of the opening quarter. The rookie out of Arizona poured in 11 points in just over two minutes to give the Blazers the lead after they had trailed by eight points.

He came on strong again to start the fourth quarter. He drove to the basket by slipping right through the Kings defense, passed inside for his first assist of summer league, and came up with a steal to set himself up for an easy dunk – all in less than a minute of game action.

Bayless saved his best for the final seconds of regulation. With Portland trailing Sacramento by two, Bayless hit an off balance, double-clutch jumper to tie the game up at 70 to force overtime. He had a chance to come up big again in the final seconds of extra time, but his short jumper bounced off the rim as the Blazers fell to the Kings 75 to 74.

Petteri Kopenen had another impressive outing with 18 points and three assists. But rookie Nicolas Batum struggled again, hitting just one of eight shots. He finished with six points and five turnovers.

The Blazers have the day off on Wednesday before returning to action Thursday night against Lake Oswego’s Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
