Fans of the Portland Trail Blazers were finally supposed to get their due last season. After years of the "Trader Bob" mentality that seemed to land every knucklehead in the NBA in Portland, the Blazers - courtesy of GM Kevin Pritchard - had finally returned to the Promised Land of the playoffs. Or so everyone thought.

What was supposed to be Portland's big coming out party, courtesy of a miraculous ping pong ball at the draft lottery, was derailed all too early when the team learned that top overall pick Greg Oden was going to miss the entire season with an injury.

Nonetheless, the Blazers were one of the better teams in the league over the first half of the 2007-08 season and some people were even talking about Nate McMillan for Coach of the Year after the team won 13 straight games through the Christmas season. The second half's schedule wasn't as kind, though, and Portland wound up missing the playoffs.

Last season was supposed to be a showdown between Oden and Kevin Durant in a race for Rookie of the Year, but the injury shifted the focus to Atlanta's Al Horford (who arguably should have won the award) and Durant. This season Oden, still a rookie since he didn't log a single game last season, will face stiff competition from Miami's Michael Beasley and perhaps his own teammate . . .Jerryd Bayless. Bayless was, without question, the top rookie in summer league, for what that's worth.

Regardless of who wins Rookie of the Year, however, the Blazers should be ready to acsend to the postseason if everyone stays healthy. And frankly, with Pritchard vowing to keep his core group together no matter the cost, they could soon be the team to beat in the NBA.

It will be hard for him to get ROY because he has a lot of talented teammates. I hope he can get somewhere around 10 and 8 in his rookie year.
